The meaning of Wendy

Wendy owes its fame to Peter Pan. Behind the Name says J. M. Barrie created it for his 1904 play from the nickname fwendy, “friend”, given to him by a young friend. Wikipedia names that friend as Margaret Henley, daughter of the poet W. E. Henley, who called Barrie “my friendy”, which came out as “my fwendy-wendy”. The name was used rarely before the play, Behind the Name adds, perhaps related to Gwendolen and the Welsh element gwen, “white, blessed”.

Nicknames for Wendy

Wendy is short and sweet, so the sources list just a couple of variants: Behind the Name gives Wendi and Wenda. For a longer formal name, a Wendy can look to the Welsh Gwendolen. Barrie’s heroine had plenty of names to spare: her full name is Wendy Moira Angela Darling.

Famous Wendys

Playwright Wendy Wasserstein won the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1989 for The Heidi Chronicles. English actress Dame Wendy Hiller earned Oscar nominations for Pygmalion, Separate Tables and A Man for All Seasons, winning Best Supporting Actress for Separate Tables. And musician Wendy Carlos helped develop the Moog synthesizer and won three Grammy Awards for Switched-On Bach (1968).

Wendy took off with the baby boom. US Social Security data has it 102nd in the 1950s, 48th in the 1960s, its biggest decade, when nearly 89,000 American girls were named Wendy, and at its best rank, 36th, in the 1970s. It fell to 135th in the 1980s and then left the top 200, so most Wendys today are in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

Fun facts about the name Wendy

The Wendy’s restaurant chain is named after a real Wendy. Wikipedia says founder Dave Thomas, who opened the first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, named it after his fourth child, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. He later wrote that he regretted it, because once the chain grew she lost some of her privacy.

Who it’s for and ways to use it

This is a notebook for every kind of Wendy: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.

Why a name on the cover matters

Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Wendy’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
