A simple, pretty journal made for one person: April. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
April comes from the name of the month, Behind the Name explains, probably from the Latin aperio, “to open, to uncover”, referring to the opening of flowers. It has only been commonly used as a given name since the 1940s. Wikipedia says it was particularly well used because April is associated with renewal, and that it was most popular in the Southern United States, where spring begins earlier than in other regions.
Behind the Name lists Avril as a variant, and it is also the French form of the name. In Spanish and Catalan the name is Abril. April has no common nicknames in the sources; two crisp syllables are enough.
Beach volleyball player April Ross won Olympic medals of every color: silver in 2012 with Jennifer Kessy, bronze in 2016 with Kerri Walsh Jennings and gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Alix Klineman. April O’Neil, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ first human ally, first appeared in the 1984 comics as a computer programmer before becoming a news reporter on TV. And on Parks and Recreation, Aubrey Plaza’s April Ludgate goes from apathetic intern to Deputy Director of Animal Control.
April peaked in the 1970s and 1980s. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 139th in the 1960s, then at its best rank, 34th, in the 1970s, when nearly 77,000 American girls were named April. It was 40th in the 1980s and 124th in the 1990s before leaving the top 200.
April beat every other month. Wikipedia says it was the most popular month name for girls in the United States between 1960 and 2000. It has since declined in English-speaking countries but remains in regular use.
Whether April is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with April on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is April’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
