Chloe: meaning and origin

Chloe means “green shoot” in Greek, Behind the Name explains, referring to new plant growth in the spring. It was an epithet of the goddess Demeter and is mentioned by Paul in one of his New Testament epistles. Wikipedia traces it to a Proto-Indo-European root linked to the colors yellow and green, and notes the ancient Greek novel Daphnis and Chloe. Behind the Name says it has been used in English since the Protestant Reformation and was the most popular name for girls in England and Wales from 1997 to 2002.

Nicknames and variants

Chloe is mostly about spelling and accents. Behind the Name lists Khloe and Chloë in English, Chloé and Cloé in French, and Cloe in Italian and Spanish, and Wikipedia adds Chlöe. Behind the Name points out that Chloë is one of the few English names often written with a diaeresis.
