Give Edith a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Edith's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Edith comes from the Old English name Eadgyð, Behind the Name explains, built from ead, “wealth, fortune”, and guð, “battle”. It was popular among Anglo-Saxon royalty, borne by Saint Eadgyeth, daughter of King Edgar the Peaceful, and by the Anglo-Saxon wife of Emperor Otto I. The name stayed common after the Norman Conquest, became rare after the 15th century and was revived in the 19th. Wikipedia says it was a top-50 name for American girls from 1880 to 1927.
Edie is the classic short form, and Behind the Name also lists the spellings Edythe, Editha and Edytha, the Danish diminutive Ditte and the medieval English Eda. Wikipedia adds Dita. In French the name is Édith, as in the singer Édith Piaf.
Edith Wharton drew on her knowledge of upper-class New York to write about the Gilded Age, and in 1921 became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, for The Age of Innocence. Édith Piaf, regarded as France’s greatest popular singer, wrote the lyrics to her signature song “La Vie en rose” in 1945. And British nurse Edith Cavell treated wounded soldiers from both sides in the First World War and helped some 200 Allied soldiers escape occupied Belgium.
Edith was a Victorian and Edwardian favorite. US Social Security data has it 31st in the 1880s and at its best rank, 29th, in the 1890s, still 30th in the 1910s, and with its biggest count in the 1920s, when nearly 63,000 American girls were named Edith. It fell to 127th in the 1940s and left the top 200. Wikipedia says it is back in England and Wales’ top 100 since 2017.
Édith Piaf’s stage name means “the Sparrow Kid”. Wikipedia says nightclub owner Louis Leplée, who discovered her in 1935, gave her the nickname La Môme Piaf, Paris slang for “The Sparrow Kid”, inspired by her nervousness and her height of only 142 centimeters (4 ft 8 in). She was born Édith Giovanna Gassion.
Edith’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Edith’s Notebook” on the cover tells Edith it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Edith’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
