A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Cindy. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Cindy began as a pet form. Behind the Name calls it a diminutive of Cynthia or Lucinda, and Wikipedia adds Cinderella to the list, noting that Cindy is now commonly used as a name in its own right. Cynthia itself is a Latinized Greek name meaning “woman from Cynthus”, an epithet of the moon goddess Artemis, because Cynthus was the mountain on Delos where she and her twin brother Apollo were born. Behind the Name says that, like Cynthia, Cindy peaked in the United States in 1957.
Cindy is a nickname that collected nicknames of its own, mostly spellings. Behind the Name lists Cinda, Cindi, Cyndi, Sindy and even Lulu as English variants, and Wikipedia adds Cindee, Cyndee, Syndee, Sindee, Sindi, Syndi, Syndy and Cyndy. The long forms, Cynthia and Lucinda, are there for formal occasions.
Cindy Crawford, born Cynthia Ann Crawford in DeKalb, Illinois, was one of the most popular supermodels of the 1980s and 1990s, and her trademark is the beauty mark above her upper lip. Photographer Cindy Sherman made her breakthrough with Untitled Film Stills, a series of 70 black-and-white photographs of herself in typical female movie roles. And singer Cindy Birdsong became famous in 1967 when she joined the Supremes, replacing co-founder Florence Ballard.
Cindy is a baby-boom name. US Social Security data has it 48th in the 1950s and at its best rank, 46th, in the 1960s, when more than 91,000 American girls were named Cindy. It fell to 103rd in the 1970s, 174th in the 1980s and 197th in the 1990s before leaving the top 200. Wikipedia says it was among the 100 most common girls’ names from 1953 to 1973.
Britain’s Sindy doll was nearly a Cindy. Wikipedia says young girls were shown a photo of the new doll and asked to choose their favorite name from a list of four, and “Cindy” won; the spelling was then made more distinctive for trademarking. Sindy launched in September 1963 and was the best-selling toy in the UK in 1968 and 1970.
Whether Cindy is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Cindy on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Cindy’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
