Give Tracy a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Tracy's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Tracy began as an English surname taken from a Norman French place name meaning “domain belonging to Thracius”, Behind the Name explains. Wikipedia traces it to the Norman family de Tracy of Tracy-Bocage in Normandy. Charles Dickens gave it to a man in The Pickwick Papers (1837), but it was popularized for girls by Tracy Lord, the heiress in The Philadelphia Story (1940), played by Katharine Hepburn, and by Grace Kelly in the 1956 remake High Society. Behind the Name adds that it is sometimes a diminutive of Theresa.
Tracy has a stack of spellings. Behind the Name lists Tracee, Tracey, Traci and Tracie, with Trace as a short form, and connects it to the Theresa family of Terri, Tess and Tessa. Wikipedia adds the rarer Tracci and Treacy. Whichever spelling she has, a Tracy can go by Trace.
Tracy Chapman’s 1988 debut album won her three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Fast Car”. Tennis player Tracy Austin, a former world No. 1, won the 1979 and 1981 US Opens and is still the youngest US Open women’s singles champion, at 16. And chemist Tracy Caldwell Dyson flew on Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2007, then served two long missions on the International Space Station, in 2010 and 2024.
Tracy is a 1960s and 1970s name. US Social Security data has it 39th in the 1960s, its biggest decade, when nearly 104,000 American girls were named Tracy, and at its best rank, 24th, in the 1970s. Wikipedia says its single best year was 1970, at 10th. It fell to 102nd in the 1980s and then left the top 200.
Tracy’s 1970 peak had a soundtrack. Wikipedia says “Tracy”, a bubblegum pop song by the Cufflinks, was a hit throughout the English-speaking world in 1969 and likely influenced the name’s popularity in 1970. Another influence was Tracy Bond, James Bond’s doomed wife in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, released in December 1969.
Tracy’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Tracy’s Notebook” on the cover tells Tracy it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Tracy’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
