Where does the name Taylor come from?

Taylor started as an English occupational surname for a tailor. Behind the Name traces it through Norman French tailleur to Latin talio, “to cut”, and suggests its modern use for girls may have been influenced by the novelist Taylor Caldwell. Since 1990 it has been more popular for girls than boys in the United States, although in England and Wales it is still slightly more common for boys. In the mid-1990s it ranked sixth for American girls and 51st for American boys at the same time.

Other forms of Taylor

Behind the Name lists Tayla and Tayler as variants, and Wikipedia adds Taylah. Tayla and Taylah are feminine spellings that are most popular in Australia and New Zealand. Taylor itself is two easy syllables, so most families let it stand on its own.

Well-known Taylors

Taylor Swift debuted as a country singer with Taylor Swift (2006) and Fearless (2008), and Wikipedia now calls her the highest-grossing live music artist. Taylor Caldwell was the pen name of Janet Miriam Caldwell (1900–1985), a Manchester-born novelist whose books include Dynasty of Death and Captains and the Kings; she also wrote as Marcus Holland and Max Reiner. And Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & the Six.

Taylor’s popularity

Taylor arrived fast. US Social Security data has it just inside the girls’ top 200, at 200th, in the 1980s, then 9th in the 1990s, when about 169,000 American girls were named Taylor. It was 17th in the 2000s and 69th in the 2010s. So most Taylors today are in their 20s and 30s, with plenty of younger ones too.

A few more things about Taylor

Why do Australians and New Zealanders spell it Tayla or Taylah? Wikipedia explains that in their non-rhotic accents, where the final r is not pronounced, Tayla and Taylah sound exactly the same as Taylor. The spelling simply follows the way the name is said.

A notebook for every Taylor

Taylor’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Taylor’s Notebook” on the cover tells Taylor it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
