A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Anne. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Anne is the French form of Anna. Wikipedia explains that Anna represents the Hebrew Hannah, meaning “favor” or “grace”. Behind the Name says Anne was brought to England in the 13th century but did not become popular until three centuries later, and that the spelling Ann was also common from that time on. It was the name of a 17th-century English queen and of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I, who was beheaded in the Tower of London.
Anne has some of the best-loved diminutives in English. Behind the Name lists Annie, Annette, Nan, Nancy, Nanette, Nannie and Nanny, plus the French Anouk and Ninon. Nancy, now a full name in its own right, appears on that list as an English pet form of Anne.
Anne Frank, born Annelies Marie Frank, kept a diary of her family’s life in hiding in a secret annex in Amsterdam from 1942 until their arrest in 1944. Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536, and her marriage and execution helped shape the start of the English Reformation. And L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908), the story of orphan Anne Shirley, has been translated into at least 36 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.
Anne had a long, steady run in the US. Social Security data has it in the top 200 from the 1880s through the 1980s, at its best rank, 57th, in the 1910s, and with its biggest count in the 1950s, when more than 52,000 American girls were named Anne. The SSA counts the spelling Ann separately, so the real number of Annes and Anns is much higher.
Anne is also a boy’s name in the Netherlands. Wikipedia says that in Frisian-speaking areas it is used for males and is related to Germanic arn names meaning “eagle”, as with the author Anne de Vries. In Ireland, Anne is used as an anglicized version of Áine.
Whether Anne is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Anne on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Anne’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
