A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Crystal. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Crystal comes from the English word for clear, colorless glass, sometimes cut into the shape of a gemstone. Behind the Name traces the word back to Greek krystallos, “ice”, and notes that it has been used as a given name since the 19th century. Wikipedia calls the feminine name a 19th-century coinage that grew along with other gemstone names, and says its use rose in the 1980s because of the character Krystle on the TV series Dynasty.
Crystal comes in many spellings. Behind the Name lists Christal, Chrystal, Kristal, Krystal, Krystle and Krystelle, and Wikipedia adds Kristel and the Spanish Cristal. The Dynasty spelling Krystle is the one that sent the name soaring in the 1980s.
Crystal Gayle, born Brenda Gail Webb, is a country singer best known for her 1977 hit “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”; her oldest sister is Loretta Lynn. Crystal Eastman was a lawyer and suffrage leader who co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920. She also co-founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and joined the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2000. And soccer player Crystal Dunn was the first overall pick in the 2014 NWSL draft and, at 23, the youngest player to win both the league’s MVP and Golden Boot.
Crystal is a 1970s and 1980s name. US Social Security data has it 152nd in the 1960s, 37th in the 1970s and 20th in the 1980s, when more than 141,000 American girls were named Crystal. It fell to 65th in the 1990s and 182nd in the 2000s. Wikipedia says it was in the top 100 for American girls every year from 1971 to 1997. Wikipedia pins its single best year to 1982, when it was the ninth most popular name for American newborn girls.
Crystal is not only a girls’ name. Wikipedia notes that as a masculine name it is a Scottish diminutive of Christopher, completely separate from the gemstone. There is also a Greek feminine form, Crystallia or Krystallia.
Whether Crystal is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Crystal on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Crystal’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
