Audrey's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Audrey is a medieval diminutive of the Old English name Æðelþryð. Wikipedia breaks that down into æðel, “noble”, and þryð, “strength”, so the name means “noble strength”. Behind the Name says it was the name of a 7th-century saint, a princess of East Anglia who founded a monastery at Ely, and that William Shakespeare used it for a character in As You Like It (1599). The name became rare at the end of the Middle Ages and was revived in the 19th century.
Behind the Name lists Audie as an English diminutive and Audra and Audrea as variants. Wikipedia notes that the old Anglo-Saxon form also survived in England as Etheldred, as with Etheldred Benett (1776–1845).
Audrey Hepburn was a British actress and humanitarian whom the American Film Institute ranked the third-greatest female screen legend of Hollywood’s Golden Age; she is one of the few entertainers to win competitive Academy, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards. French actress Audrey Tautou won the César Award for Most Promising Actress for her first feature film and became internationally known for Amélie (2001). And Audrey Meadows played the deadpan Alice Kramden on The Honeymooners.
Audrey has a long, two-peak history. US Social Security data has it 73rd in the 1920s and 1930s, then drifting down to 194th in the 1960s; it missed the top 200 in the 1970s and was back at 190th in the 1980s. Then it came back strongly: 79th in the 2000s and 38th in the 2010s, its best rank and biggest count, with more than 51,000 American girls named Audrey. Wikipedia notes it reached 41st in 2012 and was also in the top 100 for girls in France, Belgium and Canada in the 2000s.
The word tawdry comes from Saint Audrey. Wikipedia explains that lace necklaces sold to pilgrims to Saint Audrey went out of fashion in the 17th century, so “tawdry” came to mean cheap or vulgar. Behind the Name says that association made the name rare until it was revived.
