Give Bonnie a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Bonnie's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Bonnie means “pretty”, from the Scottish word bonnie, which Behind the Name traces to Middle French bon, “good”. It has been used as an American given name since the 19th century and became especially popular after the film Gone with the Wind (1939), in which Bonnie is the nickname of Scarlett’s daughter; in the film Rhett calls her Bonnie Blue. Wikipedia adds that the Scots word means handsome, pretty or attractive, and that the root goes back to Latin bonus, “good”.
Bonnie can itself be a pet form of Bonita, which Behind the Name lists as a related name. Wikipedia lists the spellings Bonny, Bonni and Bonney, and the longer Bonnibel. The word also lives in Scottish song, from “My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean” to “Bonnie Dundee”.
Bonnie Raitt released her first album in 1971, and after years of modest sales her tenth studio album, Nick of Time (1989), went to number one and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Speed skater Bonnie Blair competed in four Winter Olympics and won five gold medals and a bronze, making her one of the most decorated athletes in Olympic history. And on screen, Bonnie Blue, the daughter of Scarlett and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind, helped make the name popular in the first place.
Bonnie was at its American peak in the mid-century. US Social Security data has it 66th in the 1930s, then 33rd in the 1940s, when nearly 87,000 American girls were named Bonnie, and 50th in the 1950s, before it fell to 171st in the 1970s. Wikipedia says the name is rising again: it has been in the UK top 50 since 2020, the Australian top 100 since 2014 and the New Zealand top 100 since 2021.
Bonnie was not always just a girls’ name. Wikipedia notes that it ranked among the 1,000 most popular names for newborn American boys between 1884 and 1953, even while it was climbing toward its peak for girls.
Bonnie’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Bonnie’s Notebook” on the cover tells Bonnie it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Bonnie’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
