A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Alexis. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Alexis comes from the Greek name Alexis, meaning “helper” or “defender”, from the verb alexo, “to defend, to help”. Behind the Name notes that it was borne by a Greek comic poet of the 3rd century BC and by several saints, and that it overlaps with Alexius, the name of five Byzantine emperors. Wikipedia adds that, like Alexander, it goes back to the Greek word for “defend”. The name was traditionally male, but in the United States it has gone mainly to girls since at least the 1940s, when actress Alexis Smith began appearing in films.
Behind the Name lists Lexi, Lexie, Lexy, Lexia, Lexine, Lexus and Alexina as English diminutives, with Alexia and Alexus as close variants. Lexie even shows up in film: Wikipedia points to Ice Castles (1978), whose heroine is a blind figure skater called Alexis “Lexie” Winston. So an Alexis can be a crisp Lexi on the playground and a full Alexis on a diploma.
Alexis Smith, born in Penticton, British Columbia, starred in Hollywood films of the 1940s and later won a Tony Award in 1972 for the Sondheim musical Follies. Alexis Bledel (whose first name is actually Kimberly) played Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls and Emily in The Handmaid’s Tale. And on television, Joan Collins made Alexis Colby the scheming star of Dynasty from 1981, a character Wikipedia credits with part of the name’s rise.
Alexis is a late-20th-century favorite. US Social Security data has it 109th in the 1980s, then 18th in the 1990s, when more than 131,000 American girls got the name, and 11th in the 2000s. It was still 60th in the 2010s, and Wikipedia notes it has been in the US top 50 for girls since 1990. Most Alexises today are teens and adults under 40.
Alexis has busy cousins abroad. Wikipedia reports that the Finnish form Aleksi was the third most popular name for boys born in Finland in 2007, and that the Italian feminine form Alessia was the second most common name for girls born in Italy in 2006. One Greek word for “defend” ended up near the top of the charts in three countries.
Whether Alexis is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Alexis on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Alexis’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
