Where does the name Sylvia come from?

Sylvia is a variant of Silvia, Behind the Name explains, and has been the most common English spelling since the 19th century. Silvia is the feminine form of Silvius, and Wikipedia ties it to the Latin silva, “forest”, giving the meaning “spirit of the wood”. In Roman legend Rhea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. Behind the Name adds that Shakespeare introduced the name to England in The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1594).

Other forms of Sylvia

Behind the Name lists Sylvi as a diminutive in Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish, and Sølvi in Norwegian. Its cousins include the French Sylvie and Sylvette, the Polish Sylwia, the Hungarian Szilvia and the Italian and Spanish Silvia. Sylvie is the chic French option for a Sylvia.

Well-known Sylvias

Poet Sylvia Plath wrote The Bell Jar and Ariel, and in 1982 her Collected Poems won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, making her the fourth person to receive it posthumously. Marine biologist Sylvia Earle was the first chief scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Time’s first “Hero for the Planet”, in 1998. And Sylvia Pankhurst, daughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, organized working-class women in London’s East End.

Sylvia’s popularity

Sylvia had a long, steady run. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 in every decade from the 1880s to the 1960s, with its best rank, 71st, in the 1910s. Its biggest decade by count was the 1950s, when nearly 40,000 American girls were named Sylvia, though it ranked 108th. It was 137th in the 1960s before leaving the top 200.

A few more things about Sylvia

Sylvia Earle is nicknamed “Her Deepness”. Wikipedia says that in 1979 she made an untethered dive in a JIM suit to the ocean floor near Oahu, setting a women’s depth record of 381 meters (1,250 feet) that still stands. She is also sometimes called “The Sturgeon General”.

A notebook for every Sylvia

Sylvia’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Sylvia’s Notebook” on the cover tells Sylvia it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
