Where does the name Rose come from?

Rose began as a Norman French form of the Germanic name Hrodohaidis, meaning “famous type”, from hruod “fame” and heit “kind, sort”. The Normans brought it to England as Roese and Rohese. Behind the Name says it was linked with the flower from an early date, and when the name was revived in the 19th century it was probably the flower people had in mind. The flower’s name comes from the Latin rosa.

Other forms of Rose

Rosie is the classic pet form, and Roz and Ros are short and snappy. Rose is a favorite in longer names, so Behind the Name lists Rosemary, Rosalyn, Rosanna and Roseanne as relatives, plus modern pairings like Lily-Rose. Abroad she might be Rosa, Rosita or the Irish Róisín.

Well-known Roses

Rose Byrne, born in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, starred in Damages and Bridesmaids. Rose Kennedy, mother of President John F. Kennedy, lived to 104. And Scottish actress Rose Leslie played Ygritte in Game of Thrones, and later married her co-star Kit Harington.

Rose’s popularity

Rose has bloomed twice. US Social Security data has it in the top 30 from the 1880s to the 1920s, at its highest, 16th, in the 1910s, and with the most births in the 1920s, more than 85,000. It faded after the 1960s, then came back into the top 200 in the 2010s, so Roses today are either very young or very wise.

A few more things about Rose

Gertrude Stein’s famous line “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” comes from her 1913 poem “Sacred Emily”. In the poem the first Rose is not a flower at all but a person’s name, so the most quoted line about roses is really about a woman called Rose. The poem was later collected in her 1922 book Geography and Plays.

Gift ideas with Rose in mind

  • For a gardener. Planting plans, seed lists and notes on what bloomed best.
  • For Valentine’s Day. A rose that lasts longer than a bouquet.
  • For a new baby. Rose is back in fashion, so this makes a sweet keepsake for new parents.
  • For a poetry lover. Lines worth repeating, just like Gertrude Stein’s.

A notebook for every Rose

Rose’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Rose’s Notebook” on the cover tells Rose it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
