Doris: meaning and origin

Doris comes from the Greek name Doris, meaning “Dorian woman”. The Dorians were one of the main peoples of ancient Greece, and in Greek mythology Doris was a sea nymph, a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys and the mother of the Nereids. Wikipedia notes that the name of the Dorians is said to come from their mythical founder Dorus, from the Greek dōron, “gift”. Behind the Name says Doris began to be used as an English name in the 19th century.

Nicknames and variants

Dory is the short form Behind the Name lists for Doris, and Dorris is an older spelling. The name is also linked to Doria and Dorian, which come from the same Greek root. Doris is short, bright and easy to say, so most Dorises just keep it.

Famous people named Doris

Doris Day recorded more than 650 songs and starred in films such as Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk. Doris Lessing won the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature, the oldest person ever to receive it. And historian Doris Kearns Goodwin won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for History for No Ordinary Time, about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Doris was a 1920s favorite. US Social Security data has it 32nd in the 1910s and 8th in the 1920s, when more than 151,000 American girls were named Doris. It was still 13th in the 1930s, then faded, leaving the top 200 after the 1960s. That makes Doris a name for grandmothers and great-grandmothers, and one that may be ready for a comeback.

Doris trivia

Doris Day sang “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became her signature tune. Doris Lessing heard about her Nobel Prize from a journalist as she came home from the grocery store. She said “Oh Christ” and carried on bringing in the shopping.
