Cheryl: meaning and origin

Cheryl is an elaboration of Cherie, the French word for “darling”, perhaps influenced by Beryl. Behind the Name says it was very rare before the 20th century and seems to have been popularized in America by the actress Cheryl Walker, who had a prominent role in the 1943 film Stage Door Canteen. After peaking in the 1950s it slowly faded from the charts.

Nicknames and variants

Cher is the obvious short form, and Behind the Name also lists Cherette. Cheryl comes in lots of spellings, including Sheryl, Sherryl and Cherryl, and it is related to Cherie, Sheree and Cherilyn.

Famous people named Cheryl

Cheryl Strayed wrote Wild (2012), the story of her 1,100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. Cheryl Ladd played Kris Munroe on Charlie’s Angels from 1977. And the English singer known simply as Cheryl rose to fame in Girls Aloud and became a judge on The X Factor in 2008.

Cheryl came out of nowhere in the 1940s. US Social Security data has it 43rd in that decade and peaking at 19th in the 1950s, when more than 171,000 American girls were named Cheryl. It was 28th in the 1960s and left the top 200 after the 1980s, so most Cheryls today are in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Cheryl trivia

Cheryl Strayed wasn’t born with the surname Strayed. After her divorce, shortly before her long hike, she chose it herself after months of thinking, for its symbolism. Her book Wild was later made into a film starring Reese Witherspoon, and it inspired plenty of readers to take on the Pacific Crest Trail themselves.

Gift ideas that suit a Cheryl

  • For a hiker. Trail notes, gear lists and summit memories, in honor of Wild.
  • For a 70th birthday. Cheryl peaked in the 1950s, so plenty of Cheryls are reaching 70.
  • For a new start. Blank pages for a fresh chapter, like Cheryl Strayed’s walk.
  • For a darling. Cheryl comes from Cherie, “darling”, so this one says it for you.

How Cheryl can use it

Any Cheryl, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Cheryl can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
