Give Ann a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Ann's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Ann is the English and Manx form of Anne, which comes through Anna from the Hebrew Hannah, meaning “favour” or “grace”. Behind the Name says both Ann and Anne have been used in the English-speaking world since the late Middle Ages. Today Ann is less common than Anne, and both trail their relatives Anna and Hannah, but it is still one of the simplest and most classic names there is.
Annie is the classic pet form, and Nan, Nancy and Nanette started life as diminutives of Ann too. Behind the Name also lists Annette and Anita. Ann is a favorite in combinations, which is how we got Mary Ann, Leann, Luann and Carolann.
Ann Wilson, lead singer of Heart, fronted one of the first hard rock bands led by women and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Ann Richards was the 45th governor of Texas, from 1991 to 1995. And Ann Patchett won both the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize for her novel Bel Canto.
Ann was a steady favorite for most of the 20th century. US Social Security data puts it at its highest rank, 34th, in the 1930s, and its biggest decade was the 1950s, when it was 41st and more than 87,000 American girls were named Ann. It slipped out of the top 200 after the 1980s, so most Anns today are in their 40s and older.
“Ann Landers”, the advice columnist read across North America for 56 years, was never a real person. The pen name was created in 1943 by Ruth Crowley, a Chicago nurse writing for the Chicago Sun, who borrowed the surname from a family friend. In 1955 Eppie Lederer took over the column and made Ann Landers a household name.
Ann’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Ann’s Notebook” on the cover tells Ann it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Ann’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
