Hannah's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Hannah comes from the Hebrew name Ḥanna, meaning “favour” or “grace”. In the Old Testament Hannah is the mother of the prophet Samuel, who prays for a child and finally has one after a blessing from the priest Eli. Behind the Name says Hannah wasn’t regularly used in English until after the Protestant Reformation, unlike its relatives Anne, Ann and Anna, which go back to the Middle Ages.
Hannah has the same roots as Anna and Ann, so it shares nicknames like Annie and Nan. Spelling variants include Hanna, Hana and Chana, and Behind the Name lists it in the same family as Anne, Anita, Annette and Nancy.
Comedian Hannah Gadsby, from Smithton in Tasmania, won an Emmy and a Peabody Award for the Netflix special Nanette. Hannah Waddingham won an Emmy as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso and co-hosted the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. And philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote The Origins of Totalitarianism and coined the phrase “the banality of evil”.
Hannah has had a remarkable comeback. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 in the 1880s to the 1900s, then gone for most of the 20th century. It returned at 91st in the 1980s and soared to 11th in the 1990s, when more than 158,000 American girls were named Hannah, and 5th in the 2000s. So most Hannahs today are under 40.
Hannah is a palindrome: it reads the same backwards as forwards, which makes it one of the most famous palindromic names in English, along with Anna, Ava and Eve. It also connects to a surprising name: the Carthaginian general Hannibal’s name comes from the same ancient root, meaning “my grace is Baal”.
Any Hannah, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Hannah can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Hannah’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
