Give Morgan a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Morgan's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Morgan comes from the Old Welsh masculine name Morcant, Behind the Name explains, possibly from the Welsh mor, “sea”, and cant, “circle”. Wikipedia offers readings such as “sea chief” and “sea defender”, and says Morgan is traditionally masculine in Wales and Brittany. Behind the Name says it has been more common for American girls than boys since the 1980s, perhaps because of the enchantress Morgan le Fay or actress Morgan Fairchild.
Behind the Name lists Morgana as an English variant and Morgane as the French feminine form. The legend adds many more: Wikipedia says Morgan le Fay is also known as Morgen, Morgaine and Morgana, among other spellings. Morgana is the choice for a little extra magic.
Morgan Fairchild, born Patsy Ann McClenny, was the first actress to play Jenna Wade on Dallas and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Flamingo Road. Gymnast Morgan Hurd won the 2017 World all-around title, is one of the rare elite gymnasts to compete in glasses, and is now a photographer. And Morgan le Fay is the powerful enchantress of Arthurian legend, often Arthur’s sister, linked to the Isle of Avalon.
Morgan is a 1990s name for girls. US Social Security data has it entering the girls’ top 200 at 123rd in the 1980s and reaching its best rank, 30th, in the 1990s, when more than 91,000 American girls were named Morgan. It was 31st in the 2000s and 111th in the 2010s, so most Morgans today are in their 20s and 30s.
A mirage is named after Morgan. Wikipedia says a Fata Morgana, a complex mirage seen just above the horizon, takes its name from the Italian for Morgan le Fay. These mirages are often seen in the Strait of Messina, and were described as fairy castles in the air conjured by her magic.
Morgan’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Morgan’s Notebook” on the cover tells Morgan it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Morgan’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
