Where does the name Mildred come from?

Mildred comes from the Old English name Mildþryð, meaning “gentle strength”, from milde “gentle” and þryþ “strength”. Saint Mildred, or Mildrith, was a 7th- and 8th-century abbess of Minster-in-Thanet in Kent, and in 1030 her remains were moved to Canterbury. Behind the Name says the name became rare after the Norman Conquest but was revived in the 19th century.

Other forms of Mildred

Millie and Milly are the short forms Behind the Name lists for Mildred, and both have become popular names in their own right. Millie in particular has been a hit with parents in recent years, so a Mildred can be as old-fashioned or as modern as she likes.

Well-known Mildreds

Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias won two Olympic golds at the 1932 Games and then ten LPGA major championships in golf. Mildred Loving and her husband Richard were the couple behind Loving v. Virginia (1967), the landmark US Supreme Court case on marriage. And Mildred Pierce (1945) won Joan Crawford the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Mildred’s popularity

Mildred was a top-ten name before most people’s grandparents were born. US Social Security data has it 10th in the 1900s, 6th in the 1910s and 9th in the 1920s, when more than 147,000 American girls were named Mildred. It fell away after that and left the top 200 after the 1950s.

A few more things about Mildred

The tune of “Happy Birthday to You” is traditionally credited to Mildred Hill and her sister Patty, two teachers from Louisville, Kentucky. It started out as a classroom song called “Good Morning to All”, published in 1893, though historians still argue about who first wrote the melody. The 1998 Guinness World Records called it the most recognized song in the English language.

Gift ideas with Mildred in mind

  • For a birthday. It has to be: a Mildred is credited with the “Happy Birthday” tune.
  • For a golfer. Scorecards and course notes, in honor of Babe Didrikson Zaharias.
  • For a wedding anniversary. A name tied to one of the most important marriage cases in US history.
  • For a 100th birthday. Mildred peaked in the 1910s and 1920s, so this one’s for a centenarian.

A notebook for every Mildred

Mildred’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Mildred’s Notebook” on the cover tells Mildred it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
