Lillian's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Lillian was probably first a diminutive of Elizabeth, but it is also seen as an elaborated form of Lily, from the Latin lilium, “lily”. Behind the Name says it has been used in England since the 16th century. Wikipedia lists Lilian, Lilliann and Lilliane as other spellings, and notes that in French Lilian is the boys’ form and Liliane the girls'.
Lillie and Lily are the natural short forms, and since Lillian may come from Elizabeth, Behind the Name also links it to Libby and Lisette. Other relatives include Liana and Leanna, so a Lillian has plenty of options.
Lillian Gish, the “First Lady of the Screen”, had a film career that spanned 75 years, from 1912 to 1987. Playwright Lillian Hellman wrote The Children’s Hour and The Little Foxes. And engineer Lillian Moller Gilbreth, a pioneer of motion study, was the mother in Cheaper by the Dozen.
Lillian has bloomed twice, just like a perennial. US Social Security data has it in the top 30 from the 1880s to the 1920s, peaking at 13th in the 1900s, then fading out of the top 200 after the 1950s. It came back at 52nd in the 2000s and was 26th in the 2010s, when nearly 65,000 American girls were named Lillian.
Lillian Gilbreth had twelve children and still found time to redesign the kitchen. She is credited with inventing the foot-pedal trash can and with adding shelves to the inside of refrigerator doors, including the butter tray and egg holder. Her children wrote about the family’s busy, efficient home in Cheaper by the Dozen (1948).
This is a notebook for every kind of Lillian: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Lillian’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Lillian’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
