What does the name Kelly mean?

Kelly is an anglicized form of the Irish name Ceallach, or of the surname that came from it, Ó Ceallaigh. The meaning of Ceallach is uncertain: Wikipedia lists “bright-headed”, “strife” and “monastery church” as possibilities. Behind the Name says Kelly was mostly a boys’ name before 1940, but rose for girls in the 1940s and 1950s, probably thanks to Grace Kelly and a character on the 1957 TV series Bachelor Father.

Kelly nicknames and other forms

Kelly doesn’t need shortening, but it comes in plenty of spellings: Kelley, Kelli, Kellie and Kelleigh are all listed by Behind the Name. Its Irish roots are Ceallach and Ceallagh, and it is distantly related to the surname Callahan.

Some famous Kellys

Kelly Clarkson won the first season of American Idol in 2002 and went on to hits like “Since U Been Gone”. Kelly Rowland rose to fame in Destiny’s Child, one of the best-selling girl groups ever, and topped the US charts with “Dilemma”. And Dame Kelly Holmes won Olympic gold in both the 800 and 1500 meters at Athens in 2004.

Kelly through the decades

Kelly arrived fast. It first entered the US top 200 for girls in the 1960s, straight in at 30th, and peaked at 14th in the 1970s, when more than 133,000 American girls were named Kelly. It was still 29th in the 1980s and dropped out after the 2000s, so most Kellys today are in their 30s to 60s.

Did you know?

Kelly is one of the most common surnames in Ireland, and as a first name it started out mostly on boys. Grace Kelly helped change that: she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, the same era in which the name took off for girls. Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Grace Kelly and Gene Kelly, carried it as a surname.

Gift ideas for a Kelly

  • For a singer. Lyrics, set lists and audition notes, in honor of Kelly Clarkson.
  • For a runner. Training logs and race times, for a name shared with a double Olympic champion.
  • For St Patrick’s Day. A gift with Irish roots, for a name that comes straight from Ireland.
  • For a 50th birthday. Kelly peaked in the 1970s, so plenty of Kellys are hitting 50 now.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Kelly is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kelly on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
