Where does the name Judith come from?

Judith comes from the Hebrew Yehudit, meaning “Jewish woman” or “woman of Judea”, the feminine of Judah. In the Old Testament Judith is one of the wives of Esau, and the apocryphal Book of Judith tells of a heroine who saves her people from an invading Assyrian army. Behind the Name says Judith was used by European royals such as the 9th-century Judith of Bavaria, but only became common in English after the Reformation.

Other forms of Judith

Judy is the classic short form, and Behind the Name also lists Judi, Judie and Jude. Many famous Judiths are better known by their nicknames, which is why plenty of people never realize Judi Dench is really a Judith.

Well-known Judiths

Judith Durham was the lead singer of the Seekers, the first Australian pop group to have major chart success in the UK, with hits like “I’ll Never Find Another You” and “Georgy Girl”. Judith Kerr wrote and illustrated The Tiger Who Came to Tea and the Mog books. And Dame Judi Dench, born Judith Olivia Dench, won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love and played M in eight Bond films.

Judith’s popularity

Judith was a 1940s favorite. US Social Security data has it 40th in the 1930s and 9th in the 1940s, when more than 218,000 American girls were named Judith. It was still 34th in the 1950s and left the top 200 after the 1960s, so most Judiths today are in their 60s, 70s and 80s.

A few more things about Judith

Judith Kerr was born in Berlin in 1923, and her family fled Nazi Germany when she was a child. She told that story in When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. Decades later her picture books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea (1968), sold more than 10 million copies, so a lot of bedtime stories were written by a Judith.

Gift ideas with Judith in mind

  • For a grandmother. A place for stories and recipes, perhaps with a tiger dropping by for tea.
  • For an 80th birthday. Judith peaked in the 1940s, so plenty of Judiths are reaching 80.
  • For a folk music fan. Lyrics and memories, in honor of Judith Durham and the Seekers.
  • For a theater lover. Notes on plays seen, for a name shared with Judi Dench.

A notebook for every Judith

Judith’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Judith’s Notebook” on the cover tells Judith it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
