What does the name Joan mean?

Joan is the medieval English form of Johanne, an Old French version of Iohanna, the feminine of John. Like John, it goes back to the Hebrew Yohanan, “God is gracious”. Behind the Name says Joan was the usual English feminine form of John in the Middle Ages until Jane overtook it in the 17th century, and that it came roaring back in the early 20th century, reaching the top ten in both the US and the UK.

Joan nicknames and other forms

Joan is already short, so most Joans keep it as it is, though Jo and Joanie are common pet forms. Behind the Name places it in the big John family of girls’ names, alongside Jane, Jean, Joanna, Joanne and Johanna, and it shares diminutives such as Janet, Jeanette and Jeannie with its sister names.

Some famous Joans

Dame Joan Sutherland, born in Sydney, was known around the world as “La Stupenda” and is widely regarded as one of the greatest sopranos of all time. Joan Jett took “I Love Rock ’n Roll” to the top of the US charts and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Blackhearts in 2015. And Joan Rivers rose to fame on The Tonight Show in 1965.

Joan through the decades

Joan was a Depression-era star. US Social Security data has it 60th in the 1920s and then 7th in the 1930s, when more than 173,000 American girls were named Joan. It was still 24th in the 1940s and 45th in the 1950s, and it left the top 200 after the 1960s, so most Joans today are in their 60s, 70s and 80s.

Did you know?

Joan of Arc led the French army to lift the siege of Orléans in 1429, when she was about 17. She was executed two years later, but in 1920 Pope Benedict XV canonized her, and two years after that she was declared one of the patron saints of France. Her feast day is 30 May.

Gift ideas for a Joan

  • For a history lover. Notes, timelines and reading lists, from a name carried by Joan of Arc.
  • For an opera or music fan. Programs, playlists and concert memories, in honor of La Stupenda.
  • For a 90th birthday. Joan peaked in the 1930s, so plenty of Joans are reaching big milestones now.
  • For a comedy fan. Somewhere to jot the jokes worth keeping, in the spirit of Joan Rivers.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Joan is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Joan on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
