Janice's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Janice is an elaborated form of Jane, created by the American author Paul Leicester Ford for the heroine of his novel Janice Meredith (1899). Like Jane, Joan and Jean, it goes back to John and the Hebrew Yohanan, “God is gracious”. Wikipedia notes that Janis is a spelling variant. The book was a hit, and it became a stage play and a 1924 silent film, which helped the new name catch on.
Jan is the classic short form, and Behind the Name also lists Janie and Janey. Janice belongs to the big John family of names, so its relatives include Jane, Janet, Janelle, Janine and Jeanette, and Janis is a popular alternative spelling.
Astronaut Janice Voss flew in space five times, jointly holding the record for American women, and studied at Purdue and MIT. Marion Davies played the original Janice in the silent film Janice Meredith (1924). And Janice is the guitarist in the Muppets’ rock band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
Janice is a mid-century name. US Social Security data has it 42nd in the 1930s, 23rd in the 1940s and 24th in the 1950s, when more than 133,000 American girls were named Janice. It faded after the 1960s and left the top 200 after the 1970s, so most Janices today are in their 50s, 60s and 70s.
Janice is one of the few names that can be traced to a single book: Behind the Name says Paul Leicester Ford created it for Janice Meredith in 1899. The story follows a young woman who helps George Washington and Paul Revere during the American Revolutionary War, and its 1924 film version was also released as The Beautiful Rebel.
