Give Eva a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Eva's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Eva is the form of Eve used in many languages. Behind the Name traces Eve to the Hebrew Ḥawwa, from a word meaning “to breathe” or a related word meaning “to live”, and Wikipedia says the name spread across Europe through the Latin Bible. Behind the Name adds that Eva is the form in the Latin New Testament, while the Latin Old Testament uses Hava. Wikipedia notes that although Eve is the usual English form, Eva is more popular in most English-speaking countries.
Behind the Name lists Evie, Evvie and Eveleen as English diminutives, Evita in Spanish, Evi in German and Evy in the Scandinavian languages. Relatives include Ava and Eve in English, the Irish Éabha, the Welsh Efa and the Finnish Eeva. Evie is the sweet everyday choice, and Evita comes with a famous story.
Eva “Evita” Perón was born into poverty in rural Argentina, moved to Buenos Aires at 15 to act, and served as First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952; shortly before she died, the Argentine Congress named her “Spiritual Leader of the Nation”. Singer Eva Cassidy was little known outside Washington, D.C., when she died in 1996, until BBC Radio 2 played her “Fields of Gold” and “Over the Rainbow” two years later. And Eva Longoria starred as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives.
Eva has had two American lives. US Social Security data has it at its best rank, 33rd, in the 1890s, and with its biggest count in the 1920s, when more than 38,000 American girls were named Eva, though by then it ranked 71st. It slid to 188th in the 1950s and left the top 200, then came back at 161st in the 2000s and 81st in the 2010s.
One of literature’s best-known Evas was really an Evangeline. Behind the Name notes that Little Eva, the child in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), has Evangeline as her real name. Wikipedia adds that Eva Cassidy’s album Songbird topped the UK Albums Chart almost three years after its release.
Eva’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Eva’s Notebook” on the cover tells Eva it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Eva’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
