Give Erin a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Erin's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Erin comes from the old poetic name for Ireland. Behind the Name calls it an anglicized form of Éireann and notes that it was first used by people of Irish heritage in America, Canada and Australia, staying rare until the mid-1950s. Wikipedia explains that it comes from Éirinn, a grammatical form of Éire, and that poets and 19th-century Irish nationalists used Erin as a romantic name for Ireland. In that poetic use Erin, like Hibernia, became the female personification of Ireland, and Irish legend says the Milesians named the island after the goddess Ériu.
Erin is short already, so the sources give spelling variants rather than nicknames. Behind the Name lists Eryn and Arin in English and the Irish Éireann, and connects the name to Ériu of Irish mythology.
Erin Brockovich helped build the case against Pacific Gas & Electric over groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California, and her story became the Oscar-winning film Erin Brockovich (2000) with Julia Roberts. Erin Moran played Joanie Cunningham on Happy Days and its spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi. And Australian Erin Phillips won two WNBA championships and a world basketball title, then became a two-time league best and fairest in the AFL Women’s competition and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2025.
Erin is a name of the 1970s and 1980s. US Social Security data has it 39th in the 1970s, then 28th in the 1980s, when nearly 116,000 American girls were named Erin. It was 50th in the 1990s and 98th in the 2000s, then left the top 200. So most Erins today are in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
Wikipedia notes that Erin was rarely used as a given name for a long time, probably because no saints, queens or literary figures were ever called Erin. Yet the word was everywhere in song and politics: the slogan “Erin go bragh”, associated with the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798, is often translated as “Ireland forever”.
Erin’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Erin’s Notebook” on the cover tells Erin it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Erin’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
