A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Ellen. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Ellen is the medieval English form of Helen, Behind the Name explains, and it was the usual spelling until the 19th century, when Helen also became common. Helen comes from the Greek Helene, probably from a word meaning “torch” or possibly related to selene, “moon”. Behind the Name says early Christians used it in honor of Saint Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, who supposedly found the True Cross.
Ellen shares a big set of short forms with Helen. Behind the Name lists Ella, Elle, Ellie, Elly, Lena, Nell, Nelle, Nellie and Nelly, plus the variants Hellen and Ellena. In Scandinavia the related form is Elin, and in Welsh it is Elen. Nell is the classic choice, and Ellie the modern one.
In 1993 engineer Ellen Ochoa became the first Latina to go to space, on a nine-day Space Shuttle Discovery mission; she later became the first Latina director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Harvard-trained economist, served as president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018, the first elected female head of state in Africa, and won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize. And Ellen Burstyn won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) and the Tony Award for Same Time, Next Year.
Ellen has been steady rather than flashy. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 in every decade from the 1880s to the 1960s, with its best rank, 64th, in both the 1880s and the 1940s. Its biggest decade by count was the 1950s, when more than 55,000 American girls were named Ellen. It was 119th in the 1960s before leaving the top 200.
Ellen Ochoa is a musician as well as an astronaut. Wikipedia says that at San Diego State University she played the flute for two years in the marching band and for five years in the wind ensemble. A veteran of four space flights, she has logged nearly 1,000 hours in space.
Whether Ellen is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Ellen on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Ellen’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
