Veronica: meaning and origin

Veronica is a Latin alteration of Berenice, Behind the Name explains, its spelling influenced by the church Latin phrase vera icon, “true image”. Berenice comes from the Greek Pherenike, “bringing victory”. Saint Veronica is the legendary woman who wiped Jesus’ face with a cloth and found his image on it. Behind the Name says the name was occasionally used in the Middle Ages, was borne by the Italian mystic Veronica Giuliani, and was not common in English until the 19th century, when it was imported from France and Scotland.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Roni and Ronnie as English diminutives. Wikipedia adds the German Vroni, the Spanish Vero and the Russian Nika, and gives Véronique and Weronika as the French and Polish forms. Ronnie is the classic, and Vero is the fun one.

Famous people named Veronica

Veronica Lake was a star of 1940s films noir with Alan Ladd, famous for her peek-a-boo hairstyle and films such as Sullivan’s Travels (1941). Novelist Veronica Roth transferred to Northwestern University for its creative writing program and wrote the Divergent trilogy, which has sold more than 35 million copies. And singer Veronica Bennett is better known as Ronnie Spector.

Veronica built slowly. US Social Security data has it on the edge of the top 200 in the 1910s, 1940s and 1950s, at 133rd in the 1960s and 83rd in the 1970s, then at its best rank, 70th, in the 1980s, when more than 39,000 American girls were named Veronica. It slipped to 111th in the 1990s and 193rd in the 2000s.

Veronica trivia

Veronica Lake changed her famous hair for the war effort. Wikipedia says she changed her trademark hairstyle, at the government’s urging, to encourage women working in war factories to adopt safer styles. Veronica is also a plant: the largest genus in its family, with about 500 species known as speedwells.
