Anita: meaning and origin

Anita has more than one root. Behind the Name lists it as a Spanish, Portuguese, Croatian and Slovene diminutive of Ana, the form of Anna used in various languages. It also has a separate entry for the Indian name Anita, a feminine form of Anit. Wikipedia adds a third possibility: that Anita is a short form of the ancient Persian name Anahita. It says the name and its variants are common worldwide, especially in Europe, Iran, South Asia and North America.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Nita as the English diminutive and Ani as a Spanish variant, with Anica and Anka in Croatian and Slovene. Since Anita began as a pet form of Ana, Ana and Anna are natural long forms. Nita is the easy, everyday choice.

Famous people named Anita

Soul singer Anita Baker rose to fame with her 1986 album Rapture and its Grammy-winning single “Sweet Love”, and she has won eight Grammy Awards. Anita Loos became the first female staff screenwriter in Hollywood in 1912, when D. W. Griffith hired her at Triangle Film Corporation, and later wrote the 1925 comic novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And Indian novelist Anita Desai has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times; her daughter Kiran Desai went on to win it.

Anita had a long, steady American run. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1910s to the 1970s. Its biggest decade was the 1950s, when more than 47,000 girls were named Anita, at 91st, and its best rank was 89th in the 1960s. It fell to 154th in the 1970s and then left the top 200.
