A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Brooke. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Brooke comes from the landscape. Behind the Name calls it a variant of Brook, which comes from an English surname for someone who lived near a brook. It says the name came into use in the 1950s, probably influenced by the American socialite Brooke Astor, and was further popularized by actress Brooke Shields. Wikipedia describes Brooke as a name of English origin that is most commonly given to girls, less commonly to boys, and also used as a surname.
Brooke is already a single syllable, so it needs no shortening. Wikipedia and Behind the Name both give Brook as the other form, without the final e. That simplicity is part of its appeal: it is easy to spell and hard to shorten.
Brooke Shields began modeling at 11 months old, starred in The Blue Lagoon (1980), then took a break to earn a degree in Romance languages at Princeton; she is now president of the Actors’ Equity Association. Philanthropist Brooke Astor, who chaired the Vincent Astor Foundation, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. And Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson became the youngest winner of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at 18, in 2016.
Brooke is a millennial name. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 186th in the 1970s, rising to 83rd in the 1980s and 54th in the 1990s, its biggest decade, with more than 60,000 American girls. It reached its best rank, 47th, in the 2000s, and was still 133rd in the 2010s.
The socialite who popularized Brooke was really a Roberta. Wikipedia gives Brooke Astor’s full name as Roberta Brooke Astor, born Roberta Brooke Russell in 1902. She lived to 105, and her motto about money, Wikipedia says, was that it was “like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around”.
Whether Brooke is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Brooke on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Brooke’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
