Give Dolores a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Dolores's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Dolores means “sorrows”. Behind the Name says it is taken from the Spanish title of the Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, “Our Lady of Sorrows”. Wikipedia explains that dolores is the plural of the Spanish dolor, “sorrow” or “pain”, from Latin, and that the name is often paired with María, as in María de los Dolores. Behind the Name adds that Dolores has been used in the English-speaking world since the 19th century and was especially popular in America in the 1920s and 1930s.
Dolores has some lively nicknames. Behind the Name lists Lola and Lolita in Spanish and Dollie, Dolly and Lola in English, and Wikipedia adds Loli and Lolis. Delora, Delores and Deloris are the American spellings. Lola is the stylish favorite.
Labor leader Dolores Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Dolores del Río, a Mexican actress whose career spanned more than 50 years, is regarded as the first major female Latin American crossover star in Hollywood. And Dolores O’Riordan of County Limerick was the voice and principal songwriter of the Cranberries, famous for “Linger” and “Zombie”.
Dolores was a 1920s and 1930s favorite. US Social Security data has it entering the top 200 at 148th in the 1910s, jumping to 48th in the 1920s and reaching its best rank, 25th, in the 1930s, when more than 77,000 American girls were named Dolores. It fell to 93rd in the 1940s and 184th in the 1950s before leaving the top 200.
A Dolores may have coined “Yes we can”. Wikipedia says some credit Dolores Huerta with inventing the United Farm Workers slogan “sí se puede”, and in 2018 California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill proclaiming her birthday, April 10, as “Dolores Huerta Day”.
Dolores’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Dolores’s Notebook” on the cover tells Dolores it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Dolores’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
