Where does the name Bertha come from?

Bertha means “bright”. Behind the Name says it began as a short form of Germanic names starting with the element berht, “bright”. It was the name of several early saints, including a 6th-century Frankish princess who married King Æthelberht of Kent, and of Charlemagne’s mother. The Normans brought it to England; it died out after the Middle Ages and was revived in the 19th century. Wikipedia adds that in Alpine folklore Berchta is a figure connected to the Wild Hunt.

Other forms of Bertha

Behind the Name lists Birdie as the English diminutive, a charming pick for a modern Bertha. Abroad the name is Berta in German, Italian, Spanish and Polish and Berthe in French, and the old legend gives Berchta and Perchta. Birdie is the one to try.

Well-known Berthas

Bertha von Suttner, an Austrian novelist and pacifist who had briefly worked as Alfred Nobel’s secretary, became the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1905; she appears on Austria’s 2 euro coin. Bertha Benz, wife of car inventor Carl Benz, made the first long-distance drive in an automobile in 1888. And Bertha Krupp, who inherited the Krupp works, inspired the nickname of the giant “Big Bertha” howitzer, which German soldiers called Dicke Berta in World War I.

Bertha’s popularity

Bertha was a top-10 name in the 1880s. US Social Security data has it at its best rank, 8th, in the 1880s, then 12th in the 1890s and 20th in the 1900s. Its biggest decade was the 1910s, when more than 40,000 American girls were named Bertha, at 43rd. It slid to 157th by the 1940s before leaving the top 200.

A few more things about Bertha

Bertha Benz fixed her car with her clothes. Wikipedia says that on 5 August 1888 she drove 105 kilometers (65 miles) from Mannheim to Pforzheim with her two teenage sons, without telling her husband. She cleaned a blocked fuel line with her hat pin and used her garter as insulation. Her route is now the Bertha Benz Memorial Route.

A notebook for every Bertha

Bertha’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Bertha’s Notebook” on the cover tells Bertha it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
