Valentina: meaning and origin

Valentina is the feminine form of Valentinus, says Behind the Name, a Roman name derived from Valens, meaning “strong, vigorous, healthy” in Latin. Saint Valentine was a 3rd-century martyr, and because his feast day fell on the same date as the Roman festival of Lupercalia, Valentine’s Day became linked with love.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Valya as the Russian and Bulgarian diminutive, and Tina, Ina and Tinkara as Slovene short forms. Val and Tina both work well in English.

Famous people named Valentina

Valentina Tereshkova, born on March 6, 1937, was the first woman in space. Wikipedia says the former textile worker and amateur skydiver flew solo aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963, orbiting Earth 48 times in almost three days. She was 26, and she remains the only woman to have flown a solo space mission. Her call sign was Chaika, and an asteroid, 1671 Chaika, was later named after it.

Valentina is a 2010s favorite. US Social Security data has it at 116th in the 2010s, when more than 27,200 American girls were named Valentina. Behind the Name says it ranked 35th in the US in 2025, 3rd in Mexico in 2021 and 8th in Austria in 2024.

Valentina trivia

Valentina’s saint is honored twice a year. Wikipedia says Saint Valentine was a 3rd-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 in Western Christianity and on July 6 in Eastern Orthodoxy. From the High Middle Ages his day became associated with courtly love. Behind the Name notes that Greece celebrates Valentina’s name day on February 14, too.

How Valentina can use it

Any Valentina, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Valentina can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
