What does the name Adrienne mean?

Adrienne is the French feminine form of Adrian, says Behind the Name. Adrian comes from the Roman name Hadrianus, meaning “from Hadria”. Hadria was the name of two Roman towns, one of which gave its name to the Adriatic Sea. The emperor Hadrian, who built a wall across northern Britain, bore the name, and so did six popes.

Adrienne nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Adriana, Adrianna and Adrianne as English variants and Adrien as the French masculine form. Hungarian has Adrienn, and Croatian and Serbian have Jadranka.

Some famous Adriennes

Adrienne Rich was born on May 16, 1929, and became, in Wikipedia’s words, “one of the most widely read and influential poets of the second half of the 20th century”. Her first poetry collection, A Change of World, was chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, and he wrote its introduction. She famously declined the National Medal of Arts in protest at House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s vote to end funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Adrienne through the decades

Adrienne was a 1970s and 1980s name in America. US Social Security data has it at 200th in the 1970s and 180th in the 1980s, when more than 15,600 girls were named Adrienne. Behind the Name says it last ranked in the US top 1,000 in 2018, and reached 85th in New Zealand in 1961.

Did you know?

An Adrienne changed the way actors act. Wikipedia says Adrienne Lecouvreur, born in Champagne in 1692, made her Paris debut at the Comédie-Française in 1717 and was hugely popular. With Michel Baron she was credited with developing a more natural, less stylized acting style. Her mysterious death in 1730 inspired plays and an opera, and when the Church refused her a Christian burial, her friend Voltaire wrote a poem in protest.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Adrienne is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Adrienne on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
