Effie's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Effie is a diminutive of Euphemia, says Behind the Name, and in Scotland it has also been used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Oighrig. Euphemia means “to use words of good omen”, from Greek words meaning “good” and “to speak”. Saint Euphemia was an early martyr from Chalcedon, and the name has historically been common in Scotland.
Behind the Name lists Eppie, Femie and Phemie as English variants of Effie, all from Euphemia, with Oighrig as the Scottish Gaelic name.
Effie Trinket is the Capitol escort for District 12 in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Wikipedia says she draws the tributes’ names at the Reaping and escorts Katniss and Peeta to the Capitol for the 74th and 75th Games. At first she seems brainwashed and clueless, but she later becomes attached to her District 12 charges.
Effie was a top-100 name in the late 1800s. US Social Security data has it at 62nd in the 1880s and 76th in the 1890s, and still in the top 200 in the 1910s, when more than 7,600 American girls were named Effie. Behind the Name says it ranked 210th in England and Wales in 2025.
A fairy tale was written for a 12-year-old Effie. Wikipedia says the art critic John Ruskin wrote his fantasy story The King of the Golden River in 1841 for Euphemia “Effie” Gray, born in Perth, Scotland. She later married Ruskin, had the marriage annulled, and married the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais. The love triangle has been retold in plays, films and an opera.
This is a notebook for every kind of Effie: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Effie’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Effie’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
