A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Annabelle. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Annabelle is a variant of Annabel, says Behind the Name, and it can also be read as Anna combined with the French word belle, “beautiful”. Annabel itself grew out of the medieval name Amabel, which comes from the Roman name Amabilis, meaning “lovable” in Latin. Behind the Name says Annabel appears to have arisen in Scotland in the Middle Ages.
Behind the Name lists Bella, Mae and May among the English diminutives, and Annabel, Annabella and Arabella as variants. A girl called Annabelle has a whole bouquet of short forms to choose from.
Annabelle Moore, born Annabella Whitford in Chicago on July 6, 1878, was an early film star. Wikipedia says she made her debut at 15, dancing at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, then moved to New York and performed in several films for the Edison Studios. Known as “Peerless Annabelle”, she was the original Gibson Girl in the 1907 Ziegfeld Follies.
Annabelle is a 2010s name. US Social Security data has it at exactly 100th in the 2010s, when almost 29,000 American girls were named Annabelle. Behind the Name says it ranked 343rd in the US in 2025, 149th in England and Wales, and 74th in Quebec in 2023.
The most notorious Annabelle is a doll. Wikipedia says Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann doll that paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren claimed was haunted. They said a student nurse from Hartford, Connecticut, gave it to them in the 1970s, and they kept it in a display box at their Occult Museum in Monroe. Academics and science writers have dismissed the claims as folklore, but the doll inspired a villain in the Conjuring horror films.
Whether Annabelle is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Annabelle on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Annabelle’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
