A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Tara. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Tara has two quite different origins. Behind the Name says the Irish Tara is an anglicized form of Teamhair, possibly meaning “elevated place”, the sacred hill where the high kings of Ireland were said to reside. The Sanskrit Tara means “star”: Behind the Name says it is the name of a Hindu astral goddess and, in Buddhism, of a bodhisattva of salvation and protection. Behind the Name adds that Gone with the Wind, where Tara is the O’Hara plantation, popularized the name.
Behind the Name lists Tarah, Tera, Terra and Tarina as variants of the Irish Tara. Tarina makes a pretty longer version, and T is about the only shorter one.
Figure skater Tara Lipinski won the world championship in 1997 and Olympic gold in 1998, the youngest singles skater ever to win either title, and now commentates for NBC. Tara Westover’s memoir Educated (2018) debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and Time named her one of the 100 most influential people of 2019.
Tara was a 1970s favorite. Wikipedia says it was popular in the US in that decade, probably thanks to Gone with the Wind. US Social Security data has it at 43rd in the 1970s, with more than 65,000 American girls named Tara, then 53rd in the 1980s and 140th in the 1990s. Wikipedia adds that it was a top-40 girls’ name in Ireland from 2000 to 2005.
The Hill of Tara in County Meath is one of Ireland’s most important ancient sites. Wikipedia says tradition makes it the inauguration place of the High Kings of Ireland, and its monuments run from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, including a passage tomb and a standing stone believed to be the Lia Fáil, the “Stone of Destiny”.
Whether Tara is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Tara on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Tara’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
Where do I buy it? On Amazon. It’s printed on demand and shipped by Amazon, so delivery and returns go through your usual Amazon account.
