Bernice's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Bernice is a contracted form of Berenice, an ancient Greek name. Behind the Name traces it to the Greek roots phero, “to bring”, and nike, “victory”, and says it appears briefly in the Book of Acts, where Bernice is the sister of King Herod Agrippa II. Behind the Name also lists Veronica and Véronique among its relatives in other languages, so Bernice and Veronica are distant cousins.
Behind the Name lists a whole set of English diminutives for Bernice: Bernie, Berny, Bernetta, Birdie, Bunny and Netta, plus the variant spelling Berniece. Bernie is the everyday choice, but Birdie and Bunny are hard to beat for a grandmother with a sense of fun.
Welsh novelist Bernice Rubens became the first woman to win the Booker Prize, in 1970, for The Elected Member. Bernice Johnson Reagon was a founding member of the Freedom Singers in the civil rights movement of the early 1960s and in 1973 founded the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock. And Bernice King, the youngest child of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, became a minister and was invited to speak at the United Nations at 17.
Bernice belongs to the early 20th century. US Social Security data has it at 73rd in the 1900s and 42nd in the 1910s, and its biggest decade was the 1920s, at 46th, when nearly 56,000 American girls were named Bernice. It slipped to 87th in the 1930s and 153rd in the 1940s. Behind the Name says it was last in the US top 1000 in 1984, so most Bernices today are great-grandmothers.
One of the best-known Beatrices was really a Bernice. Wikipedia says Bea Arthur, Dorothy on The Golden Girls, was born Bernice Frankel in 1922. She won a Tony Award in 1966 for Mame and Emmy Awards in 1977 and 1988, and she was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2008.
This is a notebook for every kind of Bernice: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Bernice’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Bernice’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
