What does the name Beatrice mean?

Beatrice is the Italian form of Beatrix. Wikipedia says the English name came through the French Béatrice from the Latin Beatrix, which means “blessed one”. Its spread owes a lot to one woman: Beatrice Portinari of Florence, the woman Dante loved, who guides him through paradise in the Divine Comedy. Behind the Name adds that Shakespeare gave the name to the sharp-tongued heroine of Much Ado About Nothing.

Beatrice nicknames and other forms

Beatrice has some of the friendliest short forms going. Behind the Name lists Bea, Bebe and Bee in English and Bice in Italian, and Wikipedia adds Beatie, Trix and Trixie. Bea is the classic; Trixie is the playful one for a Beatrice with a mischievous streak.

Some famous Beatrices

Beatrice Portinari, who died in 1290, is the inspiration for Dante’s Vita Nuova and his guide at the end of the Divine Comedy, where she stands for divine grace. Princess Beatrice, born in 1988, is the elder daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson and works for the software company Afiniti. And Bea Arthur took Beatrice as her stage name, winning Emmys for Maude and The Golden Girls, where she played Dorothy Zbornak.

Beatrice through the decades

Beatrice was a big name a century ago. US Social Security data has it rising from 130th in the 1880s to 47th in the 1900s and peaking at 38th in the 1910s. The 1920s were its busiest decade, with more than 49,000 American girls named Beatrice, and it was still 105th in the 1930s. Wikipedia says it is climbing again: 597th in the US in 2023 and rising in the UK, so there are new baby Beatrices to buy for too.

Did you know?

Shakespeare’s Beatrice is one of the great wits of the stage. Wikipedia says the plot of Much Ado About Nothing hinges on “noting”, a pun on “nothing” that means gossip and overhearing: Beatrice and Benedick, who spend the play trading insults, are tricked by overheard conversations into confessing they love each other.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Beatrice is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Beatrice on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
