Amelia's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Amelia is a variant of Amalia, from the Germanic root amal, which Wikipedia glosses as “vigorous, active, work”. Behind the Name notes it is often confused with Emilia, which has a different origin. The name became popular in England after the House of Hanover took the throne in the 18th century: daughters of both George II and George III were named Amelia, and Henry Fielding used it for his 1751 novel Amelia.
Behind the Name gives Millie and Milly as the English diminutives of Amelia, and Emelia and Amilia as variant spellings. Amelia also has a famous hidden nickname: Minnie, as in actress Minnie Driver. Millie is the cheerful everyday pick.
Amelia Earhart, born in Atchison, Kansas, became the first woman to fly nonstop and solo across the Atlantic in 1932 and helped found the Ninety-Nines, an organization for women pilots, before disappearing over the Pacific in 1937. Amelia Bloomer, a women’s rights and temperance campaigner, was the first woman to own, run and edit a newspaper for women, and her name stuck to the “bloomers” she championed, even though she didn’t invent them.
Amelia went quiet for most of the 20th century and then came back strongly. US Social Security data has it at 100th in the 1880s, but it fell out of the top 200 after the 1910s. It returned at 99th in the 2000s and jumped to 12th in the 2010s, with nearly 94,000 American girls named Amelia. Wikipedia says it was the fourth most popular girls’ name in the US in 2022, and Behind the Name says it was No. 1 in England and Wales from 2011 to 2015.
Wikipedia credits part of Amelia’s recent boom to how it sounds: close to past favorites such as Amanda, Amy and Emily, and sharing the fashionable “ia” ending of Sophia and Olivia. The effect, as Wikipedia puts it, is a name that seems “different but not too different”, plus the pull of Amelia Earhart.
This is a notebook for every kind of Amelia: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Amelia’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Amelia’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
