A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Susie. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Susie is a diminutive of Susan, says Behind the Name, and Susan is the English form of Susanna. Susanna comes from the Hebrew Shoshanna, from shoshan, “lily”, perhaps from an Egyptian word for lotus. Wikipedia adds that Susie can also be short for Susanne, Suzanne or Susana.
Behind the Name lists Sookie, Sue, Suki, Suz, Suzi, Suzie and Suzy as variants. Sue is the classic short form, and Suzy the bubbliest spelling.
Susie King Taylor was born into slavery in coastal Georgia in 1848. Wikipedia says she is known as the first African-American nurse of the Civil War, caring for the wounded of the 1st South Carolina Colored Infantry. She later opened schools for freed people near Savannah, and in 1902 became the first Black woman to self-publish her memoirs. Later, in Boston, she helped organize Corps 67 of the Massachusetts Woman’s Relief Corps.
Susie is a 19th-century favorite. US Social Security data has it at 73rd in the 1880s, 81st in the 1890s and 93rd in the 1900s, and it stayed in the top 200 through the 1920s. More than 42,000 American girls were named Susie in those five decades.
Susanna has a story of her own. Behind the Name says that in the Old Testament Apocrypha, Susanna is a woman falsely accused, and the prophet Daniel clears her name by tricking her accusers, who are condemned instead. The name also belongs to a woman who ministers to Jesus in the New Testament. In the Middle Ages it was used occasionally in honor of the Old Testament heroine, and after the Reformation it was often spelled Susan.
Whether Susie is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Susie on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Susie’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
