Belinda: meaning and origin

The meaning of Belinda is not known for certain, says Behind the Name. The first part may be related to the Italian bella, “beautiful”, and the second to the Old German lind, “soft, tender”. Wikipedia offers another idea, the Old High German Betlinde. The name first appeared in the 17th century and was used by Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock (1712).

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name gives Bindy as the diminutive. Linda and Bel are easy short forms too, though the sources do not list them.

Famous people named Belinda

Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic was born in Flawil, in northeastern Switzerland, in 1997. Wikipedia says she won the junior French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2013, reached world No. 4 in 2020, and won the gold medal in singles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the biggest of her ten tour titles.

Belinda was a 1950s and 1960s name. US Social Security data has it at 166th in the 1950s and 165th in the 1960s, when more than 22,900 American girls were named Belinda. That is nearly 44,000 Belindas in two decades.

Belinda trivia

Belinda is also a small moon of Uranus. Wikipedia says it was found in Voyager 2 images taken on January 13, 1986, and named after the heroine of Pope’s poem. It is about 80 miles long and 40 miles wide, and a 2012 study found that Belinda and the moon Cupid will probably be the first pair of Uranus’s moons to collide, in 100,000 to 10 million years.

How Belinda can use it

Any Belinda, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Belinda can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
