Give Daniela a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Daniela's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Daniela is the feminine form of Daniel, says Behind the Name. Daniel comes from the Hebrew Daniyyel, meaning “God is my judge”. In the Old Testament, Daniel is a prophet who served in the court of the king of Babylon and rose to prominence by interpreting the king’s dreams. Daniel came into use in England in the Middle Ages, grew rare by the 15th century, and was revived after the Protestant Reformation.
Behind the Name lists Daniella as an English variant, with Dana, Dania, Danka, Danuška and Danna as diminutives in German, Italian, Slovak, Czech and English.
Computer scientist Daniela Rus was born in Romania and immigrated to the United States with her family. Wikipedia says she studied at the University of Iowa and earned her PhD at Cornell in 1993, with John Hopcroft as her doctoral advisor. She directs MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and works on robots, including soft robots, and her honors include a MacArthur Fellowship.
Daniela is a 21st-century favorite. US Social Security data has it at 127th in the 2000s, when more than 26,600 American girls were named Daniela, and 193rd in the 2010s. Altogether nearly 43,000 girls got the name in those two decades.
One of Daniela Rus’s projects listens to whales. Wikipedia says she is a founding scientist of Project CETI, the Cetacean Translation Initiative, which uses machine learning and robotics to study nonhuman communication. It was inspired in part by the whale-song research of Roger Payne. Rus is also a co-founder of Liquid AI, a spinout from her MIT lab.
Daniela’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Daniela’s Notebook” on the cover tells Daniela it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Daniela’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
