Give Ariel a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Ariel's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Ariel means “lion of God” in Hebrew, says Behind the Name, from ari, “lion”, and el, “God”. In the Old Testament it is used as another name for Jerusalem. Wikipedia adds that in modern Hebrew Ariel is mainly a boys’ name, while in English it became more common for girls in the 1980s.
Behind the Name lists Ariella and Arielle as English variants, with Arik as a Hebrew diminutive. Wikipedia gives Ari as a common short form, used mainly for boys in Hebrew.
The best-known Ariel is Disney’s Little Mermaid. Wikipedia says she first appeared in the 1989 animated film, voiced by Jodi Benson, as the youngest daughter of King Triton, longing to join the human world. She was the fourth Disney Princess and is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairy tale. Halle Bailey played her in the 2023 live-action film.
Ariel had two waves. US Social Security data has it at 115th in the 1990s, when more than 28,100 American girls were named Ariel, and 166th in the 2010s. Behind the Name says the name got a big push from The Little Mermaid in 1989.
There is an Ariel in orbit around Uranus. Wikipedia says the moon was discovered on October 24, 1851, by William Lassell, and its name was suggested by John Herschel in 1852. It honors both the sylph in Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock and the spirit who serves Prospero in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Voyager 2 imaged about 35% of its surface in 1986.
Ariel’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Ariel’s Notebook” on the cover tells Ariel it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Ariel’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
