Where does the name Stella come from?

Stella means “star” in Latin. Behind the Name says the name was created by the poet Philip Sidney for his 1580s sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella, and Wikipedia adds that Catholic use of Stella Maris, “star of the sea”, as a title of the Virgin Mary may have helped it along. In Greek families Stella can also be a short form of Styliani, the feminine of Stylianos.

Other forms of Stella

Stella is already short. Behind the Name lists Estelle as its English variant, along with Estella and Estrella in Spanish and Stela in several Eastern European languages. Stel and Stellie make easy nicknames among friends.

Well-known Stellas

Fashion designer Stella McCartney, daughter of Paul and Linda McCartney, launched her own label in 1997 and is known for vegan production methods. Stella Adler founded her own acting studio in New York in 1949 and taught actors including Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro. And Behind the Name points out the most famous Stella on stage: Blanche DuBois’s sister in Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire (1947).

Stella’s popularity

Stella has had two lives in the US. Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 70 from the 1880s through the 1910s, with nearly 28,500 Stellas in the 1910s, then fading to 200th by the 1940s. Then it came roaring back: 49th in the 2010s, with more than 44,000 American girls named Stella, its biggest decade yet. A Stella notebook fits a great-grandmother or a schoolgirl.

A few more things about Stella

Two Australian literary prizes trace back to a Stella. Wikipedia says novelist Miles Franklin, author of My Brilliant Career (1901), was born Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin. Her bequest funds the Miles Franklin Award, and in 2013 the Stella Prize was created for the best book by an Australian woman.

A notebook for every Stella

Stella’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Stella’s Notebook” on the cover tells Stella it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
