Give Sonya a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Sonya's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Sonya is a Russian diminutive of Sophia, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia gives Sophia’s meaning as “wisdom”. Behind the Name says Sonya is the name of a character in Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Wikipedia adds that the name was popularized in English by characters in Crime and Punishment and War and Peace.
Behind the Name lists Sonia as the English variant and Sophia as the root. Wikipedia notes that Scandinavian countries spell it Sonja.
Australian writer Sonya Hartnett was born in Melbourne in 1968 and graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1988. Wikipedia says she wrote her first novel at 13 and it was published when she was 15. She won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize for Thursday’s Child, and in 2008 the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, one of the largest cash prizes in children’s literature. She has also published as S. L. Hartnett and Cameron S. Redfern.
Sonya was a 1960s and 1970s name. US Social Security data has it at 170th in the 1960s, when more than 22,200 American girls were named Sonya, and 149th in the 1970s. That makes more than 41,700 Sonyas in two decades.
Tolstoy’s Sonya went to Broadway. Wikipedia says Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, a sung-through musical made from a 70-page section of War and Peace, features Natasha and her cousin Sonya Rostova. It opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in November 2016 and earned 12 Tony nominations, the most of the season, before closing in September 2017.
Sonya’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Sonya’s Notebook” on the cover tells Sonya it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Sonya’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
