What does the name Samantha mean?

Samantha’s origin is uncertain. Behind the Name suggests it may have been meant as a feminine form of Samuel, with the ending -antha, possibly inspired by the Greek anthos, “flower”. Wikipedia notes another theory: that it grew out of Semanthe, a name probably invented by the playwright John Suckling for his 1637 play Aglaura. Either way, it stayed fairly rare until 1964, when the TV show Bewitched made it a household name.

Samantha nicknames and other forms

Sam is the obvious short form, and Sammy, Sammie and Sammi are the playful versions. Because Sam is also short for Samuel, a Samantha shares her nickname with plenty of boys, which many Sams rather like. In Italian, Spanish and Polish the name is usually spelled Samanta.

Some famous Samanthas

Samantha Stosur won the 2011 US Open, beating Serena Williams in the final to become the first Australian woman since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980 to win a Grand Slam tournament. Sam Kerr has captained Australia’s national soccer team, the Matildas, since 2019. And English novelist Samantha Harvey won the 2024 Booker Prize for Orbital, set on a space station.

Samantha through the decades

Samantha is a modern hit. It first entered the US top 200 in the 1970s at 109th, jumped to 26th in the 1980s and peaked at 5th in the 1990s, when more than 224,000 American girls were named Samantha. It was still 8th in the 2000s and 33rd in the 2010s, so most Samanthas today are in their 20s and 30s.

Did you know?

In Bewitched (1964 to 1972), Samantha Stephens is a witch who marries an ordinary man and promises to live like a typical suburban housewife, with mixed results. The show was the second-highest-rated in America in its first season, and Behind the Name credits it with making Samantha popular.

  • For a 30th birthday. Samantha peaked in the 1990s, so lots of Sams are turning 30 around now.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Samantha is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Samantha on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
