A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Brenda. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Brenda is usually traced to the Old Norse name Brandr, meaning “fire, torch, sword”, which Norse settlers brought to Britain in the Middle Ages. Walter Scott gave it to one of the central characters in his novel The Pirate (1821), set in Shetland. Behind the Name says it only became common in the 20th century, first in Britain and then in the US from the 1930s, and it is sometimes used as a feminine form of Brendan.
Brenda is short and punchy, so it rarely needs a nickname. Its closest relatives are boys’ names: Brandr, the Old Norse original, and Brendan, the Irish saint’s name it is often linked with. Brenna is a similar-sounding girls’ name from the same family, and Branda is a rarer variant listed by Behind the Name.
Brenda Lee, “Little Miss Dynamite”, was one of the best-selling artists of the 1960s and is in both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Brenda Fricker became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, for My Left Foot (1989). And Brenda Song played London Tipton in Disney’s The Suite Life shows.
Brenda shot up in the middle of the century. US Social Security data has it 26th in the 1940s and at its peak, 18th, in the 1950s, when more than 209,000 American girls were named Brenda. It was still 19th in the 1960s and stayed in the top 200 until the 1990s, so Brendas today range from their 30s to their 80s.
Brenda Lee recorded “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958, when she was just 13. Sixty-five years later, in December 2023, it finally reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, making her the oldest artist ever to top the chart. The name also got a boost from Brenda Frazier, whose 1938 debutante ball was so widely covered that she ended up on the cover of Life.
Whether Brenda is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Brenda on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Brenda’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
