Give Carolyn a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Carolyn's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Carolyn is a variant of Caroline, the French feminine form of Carolus, which is the Latin form of Charles. Behind the Name says Charles goes back to the Germanic name Karl, from a word meaning “man”, though another theory links it to a word meaning “army”. The Carolyn spelling, with its -lyn ending, was especially popular in the US in the middle of the 20th century.
Carolyn has a big family of nicknames. Carrie, Callie and Carly are the friendliest, Carol is the classic short form, and Lottie and Charlie come from the wider Charles family. There are also spelling twins such as Karolyn, and the longer Caroline and Carolina.
Carolyn Porco is a planetary scientist who led the imaging science team on the Cassini mission to Saturn and is an expert on planetary rings. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy rose from sales to publicity at Calvin Klein before marrying John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996. And the most famous Carolyn of all may be one who never existed.
Carolyn peaked during World War II. In US Social Security data it climbed from 119th in the 1920s to 29th in the 1930s and 12th in the 1940s, when nearly 182,000 American girls were named Carolyn. It stayed in the top 60 through the 1960s and in the top 200 until the 1980s, so most Carolyns today are in their 60s, 70s and 80s.
Carolyn Keene, the author named on every Nancy Drew mystery, was not a real person. It was a pen name used by a team of ghostwriters hired by the Stratemeyer Syndicate, starting with Mildred Wirt Benson, who were paid a flat fee per book. The Keene name even appears on a spin-off series called The Nancy Drew Notebooks.
Carolyn’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Carolyn’s Notebook” on the cover tells Carolyn it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Carolyn’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
